Gotthard

Marc Lynn, guitarrista del grupo suizo Gotthard, nos habla sobre su próximo DVD y disco en directo y de una posible visita a España

Saludos. Primero de todo felicitaros por vuestro "Lipservice", en mi opinión, una joya dentro de vuestra discografía y, sin duda, ya está en mi lista de mejores discos del pasado 2005.
Para empezar... ¿qué significado tiene para vosotros "Lipservice"?

Primero de todo: hola y gracias por "los cumplidos para el disco"...
Sobre el título " Lipservice"... la mayoría de gente cree que es un significado sexual... pero es incorrecto (con una pequeña sonrisa)
"Lipservice" significa, por ejemplo, si alguien te hace un cumplido pero a tus espaldas habla mal de ti. Si me dices en la entrevista que hemos hecho un buen disco pero en tu revista escribes lo contrario. Los políticos lo usan mucho, para conseguir sus objetivos... hablan de maravillas...
Estas son situaciones que puedes ver diariamente en la televisión, los periódicos y, si eres famoso, te ocurrirá con toda la gente que hay a tu alrededor.

Con éste disco volvéis a sonidos más rockeros, como en G o Dial Hard... ¿qué nos podéis contar sobre ésto? ¿Ha sido algo premeditado?

Era el momento adecuado para un pequeño cambio. Como cambiamos en el 99 con "Open"; ahora era el momento de volver a tocar canciones más duras. No es deliberado, es simplemente gusto, sentimientos del momento.

Contadnos cómo fue la producción, el sonido escogido... es decir, el proceso de grabación.

Las canciones ya estaban hechas cuando fuimos al estudio. Afortunadamente, tenemos nuestros propios estudios, lo que hace todo el proceso de grabación mucho más fácil. Leo como productor y Ronald Prent como segundo productor hicieron un gran trabajo y nos hicieron sentir muy bien. Así que todas las grabaciones se volvieron realmente fáciles para el grupo y los productores tuvieron ideas fantásticas que nos hicieron la vida mucho más fácil. Las sensaciones y el ambiente fueron perfectos todo el tiempo.

¿Cómo os sentís con vuestro sello, Nuclear Blast?

En Suiza tenemos nuestro propio sello llamado G. Records. En el resto del mundo tenemos Nuclear Blast. Son conocidos como una discográfica para grupos muy duros. Incluso para ellos, fue un reto tener a un grupo de rock. Están haciendo un gran trabajo y para nosotros es genial que nuestro disco se lance en todo el mundo.

Desde mi punto de vista, se os podría considerar una banda de rock clásico cercana al AOR, ¿cómo os definiríais vosotros para que, alguien que nunca os ha escuchado, se haga una idea de que se va a encontrar cuando escuche algún disco vuestro?

Tocamos hard rock con muchas melodías y armonías, basadas en el blues clásico.

¿Y cómo definiríais vuestro último trabajo?

Rock directo, grandes melodías, animado...
Tiene de todo, desde canciones duras hasta grandes baladas... Simplemente rock típico y genial

¿Cuáles son vuestras principales influencias a la hora de componer? Tanto en las letras como en la música.

Para la música nuestras principales influencias son nuestra vida y nuestro corazón. Nos encanta el rock directo y sin complicaciones, éso es para lo que nacimos.
Las letras están basadas en nuestra vida. Historias que hemos vivido.
Exposiciones sobre diferentes situaciones de nuestra vida o de todo el mundo.

¿Tenéis más influencia de grupos europeos o de rock americano? Dentro de este estilo los grupos se suelen separar en esos dos grupos.

"Lipservice" está más influenciado por el rock europeo. Los últimos discos seguián más la corriente americana. Éso depende del productor con el que trabajes. Diferente productor significa diferente sonido.

Con vuestra gira de Lipservice disteis 3 conciertos en España, en los 3 casi se consigue el lleno absoluto, ¿os esperábais esta acogida por parte del público español?

No, nunca. Fue una enorme sorpresa para todos... Fantástico... Gracias España.

Ahora lo que mucha gente se estará preguntando... ¿está España en la lista de países en los que volver a descargar?

España es, sin duda, uno de los principales nuevos mercados y no dejaremos esperar mucho tiempo a esa gente hasta que volvamos...
Ya estamos planeando hacer algún festival en España este año.

Cuando tuve la oportunidad de veros en directo, disfruté al máximo, a parte de buen sonido lo dais todo, el público también estaba completamente entregado y, cuando pensaba que no se podía mejorar el concierto, tocasteis una versión del mítico "Immigrant Song", ¿ por qué decidís tocarla en vuestros conciertos?

A todos nos encanta "Led Zeppelin". Aprendimos a tocar nuestros instrumentos con canciones de los "Zepp". Antes tocábamos "Rock N' Roll", de "Led Zeppelin" como último bis en cada actuación. Ahora hemos pensado que es hora de cambiar. Así que decidimos tocar esa canción. Es un placer por parte del grupo y Steve canta esta canción realmente genial... Así que, ¿ por qué no tocarla?

A parte de pequeños conciertos, habéis actuado en festivales europeos, qué preferís: ¿ actuar en festivales y compartir escenario con distintos grupos o conciertos más reducidos?

No me importa. Las dos formas son geniales. Los conciertos pequeños son mucho más privados, los festivales son fantásticos para ganar nuevos fans y para conocer a otros músicos.

Gotthard sois un grupo con más de una década de carrera a vuestras espaldas y, si algo os caracteriza, es que nunca habéis perdido la clase y el sonido cuidado que os caracteriza, habéis innovado, ningún disco aburre ni se parece a otro anterior, ¿ hay algún aliciente para conseguir esto y no defraudar a vuestros fans?

Una pregunta mejor sería "¿Qué nos motiva para conseguir ésto y mantenernos felices? Jeje...
Queremos dar calidad, no sólo una o dos canciones buenas en cada disco.
Es por ésto por lo que trabajamos muy duro en cada álbum para mantener o aumentar el nivel de las canciones. La autocrítica es la mejor forma de hacer ésto. Un disco es como un bebé, intentas sacar lo mejor de él.

Parece que, últimamente, en vuestro país, están surgiendo bastantes grupos de vuestro estilo, ¿ tenéis idea de algún grupo de éstos? ¿Hay, actualmente, un gran movimiento rockero como respuesta a esta oleada?

Conozco a muchos músicos y sus grupos. Es un país pequeño, así que los conoces a todos. Hay muchos grupos muy buenos en Suiza pero, desafortunadamente, no pueden mantener la calidad de su trabajo. ¿Una gran oleada de Rock? No, pero canciones un poco más duras en radio y televisión, sí.

¿Qué proyectos de futuro tenéis? Estáis trabajando en vuestro próximo disco?

Sí, nuestro próximo disco saldrá a la venta en pocas semanas. Será un disco en directo con un DVD gratis incluído. Este disco fue grabado en Zurich, Suiza.

Supongo que, tras éstos años en el mundo de la música, más de una persona se pregunta si nunca habéis pensado en grabar un directo, un recopilatorio o, como se estila ahora, un DVD. Muchísimos grupos ahora, cuando sobrepasan la década de carrera, aprovechan para sacar material de este estilo, ¿ os lo habéis planteado alguna vez?

Ahí está. Por supuesto que nos hemos planteado muchas veces grabar algo en directo e incluso lo hemos hecho. Tenemos muchas cintas que nunca salieron a la venta. Pero ahora, el momento adecuado ha llegado.

Mucha gente se queja de que el panorama rockero actual está estancado, que la mayoría de grupos o, los más conocidos, no innovan cuando todavía falta mucho por inventar, pero, cuando un grupo cambia, recibe malas críticas por ése cambio... vosotros con qué os quedáis: ¿ grupos innovadores o que siguen siempre los mimos parámetros?

Creo que las dos partes son muy importantes. AL final son los fans quienes deciden qué les gusta y qué no. Cada grupo tiene que probar cosas diferentes. De lo contrario, se estancarán. Pero el camino que seguir es complicado... no hay mucho margen en el que moverse.

¿ Cómo veis la escena rockera actual y dónde situáis a Gotthard?

La escena rockera está volviendo poco a poco. Ahora puedes escuchar esta música en la radio. Cada vez suenan ahí canciones más duras. Pero no puede ser como en el pasado, el mundo del rock ha cambiado.
Gotthard es uno de los grupos clásicos. Para nosotros lo más importante es la música y los buenos conciertos. Somos conocidos en todas partes pero no tenemos nivel de 'superestrellas', excepto en Suiza.
Seguimos nuestro camino de calidad y queremos seguir así unos años.

Supongo que después de tantos años en este mundo, tenéis muchas anécdotas y curiosidades por contar... ¿ alguna digna de mencionar o la más sonada?

Sí... sí, hay algunas historias que contar...
Pero una muy divertida fue, cuando tocamos en el Kremlin, en Moscú. Vinieron a vernos 4500 personas y cuando ya estábamos en el camerino tuvimos que pasar un detector de metales antes de subir al escenario... fue muy divertido. Supongo que os imagináis la situación...

Ahora demos paso a otro tipo de preguntas, porque, como sabéis, en Queens Of Steel apoyamos, especialmente, a la mujer dentro del mundo del rock/metal. ¿ Creéis que hay grupos femeninos pero que, suelen ser infravalorados y juzgados por su físico o que, por lo contrario, se valora de misma manera a las mujeres que a los hombres y se les juzga por su calidad como músico?

No, por supuesto que no. Pero nunca he visto a una mujer en pie y representando una actuación en el escenario de la forma en que un hombre puede hacerlo. Muchas de ellas tocan muy bien y escriben buenas canciones... pero para representar la imagen del rock 'n' roll, en plan orgulloso, duro, chulo... Lo siento, los hombres pueden hacer ésto mejor... (Pero sólo ésto)

En los 80 las mujeres dentro del mundo del rock, más que como artistas, eran vistas como "groupies", ¿ creéis que ha habido un gran cambio respecto a los 80 hasta ahora?

Sí, las mujeres están más metidas en la música que nunca. Puede ser que todavía más en el pop que en el rock. Pero hay muchas recién llegadas que están haciendo un gran trabajo.

¿ Qué grupos con mujeres en sus filas escuchas?

Antes escuchaba a grupos como "Bangles",etc.
Actualmente escucho todo tipo de bandas femeninas, desde estrellas solistas como Alanis Morrisette (pop/rock) hasta Avril Lavigne.

Ésto es todo, ha sido todo un placer poder conoceros un poco más, ahora si queréis añadir algo, es vuestro turno. Muchísima suerte y ¡esperemos que no pase tanto tiempo como la última vez en volver a veros por España!

Greetings. First of all, congratulations for "Lipservice", in my opinion a wonderful album and, undoubtly, one of my favourite albums in 2005.
As a start... What does the name of the album mean to the band?

First of all: Hello and thanxx for the “album flowers”….
About the title “Lipservice”… Most peoples think about the sexual meaning… but this is wrong (with a little smile)
So "Lipservice" means par example if someone makes you a compliment but behind your back he talks bad about you. If you tell me in the interview that we have made a great album but in your magazine you write the opposite. Politics use this a lot, when they want to reach a target.... they speak something beautiful..
These are situations you can watch daily in the TV, newspaper and if you are known in the public you will get it from all peoples around you.

With this album, you go back to more of a rock sound, like in G or Dial Hard... What can you tell us about this? Was it deliberate?

It was the right time for a little change. As we’ve changed in the year 99 with *”Open”; now it was the right time to play again harder tunes. It’s not deliberate it’s just taste, feelings at the moment.

About the production, the kind of sound you chose, the recording process.. what was it like?

The songs where already done as we went to the studios. Fortunately we have our own studios, which make the whole process of working much easier. Leo as the producer and Ronald Prent as second producer did a great job and they made us feel very good. So the whole recordings went really easy for the band and the producers came up with fantastic ideas which made our live much easier. The feeling and the mud where perfect the whole time.

How are you feeling with your label, Nuclear Blast?

In Switzerland we have our own label named G.records. In the rest of the world we have Nuclear Blast. They are known as a Label for really hard tunes. Even for them it was a challenge to have a rock band. They are doing a great job and for us it’s great to be released all over the planet.

From my point of view, you can be considered a classic rock band close to AOR. How would you define your music, so that someone who hasn't ever listened to it can get an idea of what to expect?

We play hard rock with a lot of melodies and harmonies inside, based on the classical blues

And how would you define your last album?

Straight rock tunes, great melodies, alive…
Everything on it, from hard songs to great ballades.. Just ordinary great rock music.
You can listen to the whole album you like a concert.

Considering your lyrics and your music, what are your main influences when composing?

By the music is the main influences our life and our heart. We love straight uncomplicated rock, that’s what we’re born to.
The Lyrics are based on our life. Story’s we’ve experienced.
Statements, about different situation from our life or around the world.

In this music genre, most bands are followers of American rock or European bands. Which one has influenced you more?

“Lipservice” is following more the European rock. The last albums where following the American way. This is depending even on the producer you work with. Different producer means different sound.

In your Lipservice gig, you played in 3 Spanish cities, and in all of them tickets were sold out. Did you expect such a reception by the Spanish public?

No, never. It was a big surprise even for us…. Fantastic… thnxx Spain.

Now, what many people here are wondering... is Spain one of the countries in which you'll rock in the next gig

?
Spain is for sure one of the main new market we have and we’re not going to let these people wait for to long, until we will come back…
We’re already planning to make some festival in Spain this year.

When i had the chance to see your show, i enjoyed to the maximum. Apart from a very good sound quality, you did your best, the crowd was really captivated and, when i thought it couldn't get any better, you played a cover of that classic "Immigrant song". why did you decide to play that song in your concerts?

We all love “Led Zeppelin”. With “Zepp” tunes we learned to play our instruments. In the past we were playing “Rock n’ Roll” from “Zeppelin” as last encore at every show. Now we’ve thought that it’s time for a change. So we’ve decided to play this tune. It’s a pleasure from the side of the band and Steve is singing these Song really great… So, why not playing it?

Apart from little concerts, you've played in European festivals. What do you prefer: sharing the stage with other bands in festivals, or small concerts?

I don’t care. Both ways are great. Small concerts have much privacy; festivals are great to gain new fans and to meet other musicians.

Gotthard has been playing for more than a decade and you've always been characterized by your class and by keeping your cared sound, you've innovated, none of your albums is boring and all of them are different. What motivates you to achieve this and keep your fans happy?

The better Question would be:
What motivates us to achieve this to keep us happy J He he….
We want to bring quality, not only one or two good songs each album.
That’s why we work really hard on every album to keep or raise the level of the songs. Self-critical is the best way to do this. An album is like a baby, you try to get the best out of it.

It looks like in your country, many bands of your style are coming up lately. Do you follow any of these bands? Is there at the moment a big rock wave as a result of this?

I know many musicians and their bands. It’s a small country so you know them all. There are many great bands in Switzerland but unfortunately they can’t keep the quality of there work. Big Rock wave – No, but harder tunes at the radio and TV – Yes.

What are your projects for the future? Are you already working in your next album? What can you tell us in advance about it?

Yes, our next album will be released in a few weeks. This will be a “Live” album with a free bonus DVD included. This album was recorded in Zurich Switzerland.

I guess that, after all these years in the music world, many people are
wondering if you haven't ever thought of releasing a live album, a
compilation or a DVD. At present, many bands that have been playing for more than a decade, release this kind of material. Have you ever considered it?

Here it is…. Of course we’ve planed many times to record something live and we even did this. We have many tapes which where never released. But now, the right time is here.

Many people complain about the rock scene nowadays being at a standstill, as most bands (or the most famous ones) don't innovate at all when there's much left to be invented. But, sometimes when a band tries something different, they are badly criticized because of the change. What do you prefer, innovative bands, or those that always follow the same patterns?

I think both sides are very important. At the end are the fans which make the decision what’s cool for him or not. Every band has to try different ways. Otherwise they will stand still. But the way how to do it is very small… you don’t have much space to move.

What's your vision of the current rock scene, and where do you think Gotthard is located in the music scene?

The rock scene is slowly coming back. You can hear this already at the radios. Harder tunes are played there. But it wouldn’t be like in the past, rock will has a new outfit.
Gotthard is one of the classic bands. The important thing is the music and the great live shows for us. We’re known all over but we have no supersarlevel, except for Switzerland.
We’re going our way of quality and we want to go on again a few years.

I guess that, after all these years, you have lots of interesting anecdotes you can tell. Which one is the most talked of, or most worth mentioning?

Yes.. Yes, there are some Stories to tell….
But a funny one was, as we’ve played in the Kremlin in Moscow. 4500 people came to see us and we were already in the hall and have to pass the metal detector before we went on stage… that was really funny. I think everyone can imagine this situation….

Now, for a different kind of questions. As you know, in Queens of Steel we specially support women in the rock/metal world. Do you think that many female bands are underestimated and judged by their physique, or, on the contrary, both men and women are equally appreciated and judged only by their musical quality?

No of course not. But I even have never seen a woman standing and presenting a performance on stage in a way that looks really mean like a man can do. Many of them play fantastic and they write good songs…. but to present the Rock n’ Roll image, proud, hard, cool….. Sorry, man can do this better…. (But only this)

In the 80s, women in the rock scene, more than artists were considered like 'groupies'. Do you think this has changed in the recent years?

Yes, women are much more in to music than ever. Maybe still more in Pop than Rock. But there are many newcomers which are doing a great work.

Which bands with female components do you listen to?

In the past I was listening to bands like “Bangles” etc.
In these day’s I’m listening to all kind of female bands, from Single Stars like Alanis Morrisette (Pop/Rock) until “Avril Lavigne.”
